Searsport Bluegrass Jam Information Page
The Searsport Bluegrass Jam meets from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. every OTHER Saturday at the Mermaid Plaza, 1 East Main St., Searsport, ME 04974.The Jam is open to all players on all instruments at all skill levels, and spends time helping beginners and newcomers learn the joys of playing Bluegrass.
The leader is Stan D’Aubin who may be contacted by cell at 1 (479) 856-1096 and by email at [email protected] . Contact Stan to confirm the meeting schedule.
Sheet music for the songs the Jam generally performs is available online at the SearsportJam.com website. Open the navigation menu for that site (often three parallel lines in the upper right of the main window,) and select Strung Together first. From the submenu, select Bluegrass and Old Time to see a resource page for the songs we generally play. For each song there is usually sheet music, a Nashville Number System notation for the chords, the chords in a common key, and links to YouTube videos of songs that match the arrangement the jam plays. John Elberfeld maintains this site. Please contact John at [email protected] if you come across broken links or information that needs correcting.
There is no printed music supplied. "The Real Bluegrass Book" is a Fake Book of 350 bluegrass songs, many of which we play. It is a good resource for newcomers. Most players bring an iPad or tablet of some kind to access the song sheets online, although smart phones also work. The Wifi connection is made to Mermaid Plaza. The required password is posted in the plaza. Please be willing to look at the song sheets at the jam so all players are in the same key playing the same chords at the same time. Even if your cousin learned the "correct" chords to a song from Bill Monroe's nephew, we all sound better if you play the same chords as everyone else in the group.
Stan is the group leader. Because the group has beginners, if there is a song you would like to play at the jam and you have checked the web site and it is NOT there, let Stan know the name of the song and the key it is played in well ahead of time. Stan will filter the song requests and inform John of songs to add to the website so everyone, even the beginners, can play along and enjoy your choice of music. Also, please let Stan know of songs on the web site you are willing to lead for the group. If several capable singers share the leads, Stan will have a voice left at the end of the jam.
