Introduction to Old-Time and Bluegrass Music
Last summer I attended an old-time music camp. Within an hour I realized that I did not have the basic knowledge and skills needed to participate, in spite of the “Beginners Welcome” line on the poster. Being a retired teacher, I dealt with my frustration by creating this on-line course that introduces “complete” beginners to traditional music, with a focus on fiddle tunes and bluegrass.
This tutorial offers the basic knowledge needed by players of the guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, bass, piano, and other instruments to successfully back up soloists on stage or in a jam session, Although fiddle players are not usually thought of as part of the rhythm section, they also need these skills when they support other musicians. My hope is that you might share the link to this course to help other players new to old-time music prepare for a camp, workshop, or a simple jam session. It is completely free with no obligations.

Please let me know of any topic needed to make the course more useful to you. (A list of corrections is also welcome.) The course will grow and improve as I learn more and receive feedback. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments at [email protected]
